  • Convertible Top Provides Cool Breeze or Refuge in Less Than 21 Seconds
  • Sedan-like Noise, Vibration, Harshness Characteristics in a Hardtop Convertible
  • Available F Sport Performance Accessories

The sophisticated Lexus IS 250C and IS 350C continues to blend the expressive stylishness of a hardtop convertible with the quietness and comfort of a coupe. Young at heart customers appreciate the IS convertible’s ability to quickly go from hardtop to convertible in less than 21 seconds. A fun-in-the-sun driving experience is enhanced with numerous standard and optional features including new 18-inch 5-spoke wheels with Liquid Graphite finish, leather-trimmed seating, heated and ventilated front seats and F  Sport performance accessories. As it enters the 2012 model year its sporty style is complemented with the addition of a Nebula Gray Pearl exterior as it replaces Smoky Granite Mica.

Engine/Transmission/Drivetrain/Performance
The IS convertible models feature the same powertrains as the IS sedans. The IS 350C's 3.5-liter V6 delivers exhilarating performance with outstanding 306 horsepower at 6,400 rpm along with 277 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,800 rpm. The IS 250C's 2.5-liter V6 engine has a great combination of fuel efficiency and performance. The IS 250C’s V6 produces 204 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 185 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,800 rpm. Both engines utilize aluminum cylinder blocks and heads, while employing dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i), which controls timing on both the intake and exhaust camshafts.

A direct-type fuel-injection system provides a cooling effect in the cylinders, enabling the high compression needed to extract maximum energy from the fuel. Aside from its larger displacement, the 3.5-liter V6 differs chiefly in that it augments the direct fuel injection with port fuel injectors. In light- and medium-load conditions, these additional injectors help produce a precise burn, increasing power and efficiency, while reducing emissions. A dual exhaust system reduces backpressure at higher engine speeds. Both the IS 250C and IS 350C meet the Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle II (ULEV II) certification.

An advanced six-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters is standard on the IS 350C. The IS 250C comes with either a six-speed manual transmission or the paddle-shift, six-speed automatic transmission.

Chassis/Body/Suspension/Tires/Brakes
The convertible’s three-piece hardtop provides open-air freedom with the top down through the operation of a convenient single switch. Constructed primarily of lightweight aluminum, the hardtop also provides surprising storage space but with low noise and increased security not typically found in soft-top convertibles. In addition, the top completely retracts with no elements remaining in view.

The four-link roof assembly, also made of aluminum for a lightweight design, provides smooth, even movement. Engineered to operate in an easy, efficient manner, each component is motor driven with detection switches, allowing the control unit to know their exact position at all times. In addition to the two main roof panels being constructed of light-weight aluminum, the back window’s reinforced glass construction also lends itself to reduced weight. Weather-strip changes in areas around the doors and windows ensure tight seals.

A roof-speed brake-control system decreases the roof speed especially as it approaches the end of the closing operation in either direction, ensuring an elegant and quiet movement. On models equipped with available Intuitive Park Assist (IPA), sonar sensors in the rear bumper will stop the movement of the luggage door at the start of operation if it detects an obstacle will interfere. Also, a visual warning will appear on the instrument panel if a detected obstacle may soon interfere with top operation.

When the IS convertible’s top is opened or closed, the power windows will automatically lower if in the closed position, and raise back up when the operating switch is held. Also, when the top is up, the door windows automatically lower 15 mm when the door opens, and then raise back into a fully closed position when the door closes. This ensures the doors’ clean open/close function while also maintaining a tight seal around the glass.  The aluminum hardtop features an automatic front lock assembly that provides the interior security not found in soft-top convertibles. When the top is stowed in the down position in the rear of the IS convertible, the lock assembly is engaged to keep the panel in a fixed, stable position.

The IS convertible’s body structure has excellent rigidity and strength, achieved by effective structural changes and additions to the existing IS sedan platform. Areas that received modifications or additions include the rocker area; A and B pillar under structure; side collision crossmember, and upper and rear-floor crossmembers. In addition, underfloor braces were added both in the front and the rear.  Additional bracing was implemented to help provide excellent handling control, ride comfort and body durability while also minimizing weight gain.

The transformation to a convertible also required reevaluation of noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) characteristics in order to meet Lexus standards. All body and chassis revisions went through extensive testing to ensure that the IS 250C and IS 350C have nearly identical NVH characteristics to the IS sedans. High-rigidity damping materials and asphalt sheets were added to help minimize vibration effects. Redesigned rear-suspension-mount bushings help reduce noise and vibration associated with the changes in body characteristics from a sedan to a convertible. Additional sound absorption and insulation materials were optimally positioned to create a quiet, comfortable cabin.

The IS convertible features two wheels. Standard 17-inch wheels utilize two multi-layered five-spoke patterns for a contemporary 10-spoke design with a clean liquid-graphite finish. Optional 18-inch wheels with all-season tires have an athletic five-spoke design with a liquid-graphite finish. Both feature the tire pressure monitor system found on the sedan models.

The IS 250C and IS 350C provide a consistent blend of driving performance and comfort in either convertible or coupe configuration. They share common double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension systems with the IS sport sedan models.

Engineers tuned and optimized specific features for the convertible including the double-wishbone front suspension for handling control and ride comfort; the torsional rigidity of the suspension bushings, the spring constant on the coil springs, and the shock absorber damping force; the stabilizer shape and the Electric Power Steering (EPS) gear ratio for control; the suspension bushings, coil springs and shock-damping force of the multi-link rear suspension; and a lowered rear-suspension tower with enhanced rigidity to help provide rear control, linear yaw response and improved trunk space.

Standard Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management System (VDIM) governs all of the vehicle’s dynamic handling systems – the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Brake Assist (BA), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRAC) – employing them collectively and seamlessly to make corrections while helping provide higher dynamic capability. VDIM also interfaces with the electronic throttle control system. The IS convertible features large, ventilated four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and BA. The IS 350C is equipped with 13.2-inch front and 12.2-inch rear rotors with aluminum four-piston front calipers to aid in heat dissipation and stopping power and reduce unsprung weight. The IS 250C has 11.7-inch front and 12.2-inch rear rotors.

Lexus Safety and Security
Passive-safety technology begins with a number of body-structure changes integrated in the IS 250C and IS 350C to help augment strength and torsional rigidity. Seatbelt pre-tensioners and force limiters are used for the front seats, while the rear seats adopt emergency locking retractor seatbelts with an automatic locking retractor.

In addition to the dual-front airbags, the Lexus Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) for the IS convertible includes front-seat-mounted head and torso side airbags, and knee airbags for both the driver and the front passenger. The front-passenger airbag features two chambers, creating an indentation in the center impact area.

Luxury/Comfort/Convenience
The IS convertible emphasizes easy access and rear-seat comfort. In addition to front doors that are 11.8 inches longer than the IS sedans, two convenient fold-forward lock-release levers are standard on both sides of the front passenger seats, making it easier to operate from any location inside the vehicle. The passenger seat features a power slide button on the top of the seatback to ease rear seat ingress/egress. An available automatic one-touch, easy-entry power-seat mechanism provides even easier egress and ingress through quick-acting, front-seat fold-and-slide activation. The two passenger doors also have three open-stopping positions (rather than the normal two) to add convenience in various parking situations. The IS convertible also is equipped with a standard power tilt and telescoping steering column to help the driver quickly get into a comfortable position.

The IS convertible’s air conditioning system automatically adjusts for the outside temperature when the top is lowered, improving interior temperature consistency and comfort. The system adjusts the air outlets, temperature and air flow exiting the outlets. The airflow volume adjusts to outside temperature and vehicle speed, while the temperature control adjusts to outside temperature, amount of sunlight and vehicle speed. The system also includes a pollen filter and variable-control compressor.

The standard SmartAccess keyless entry and push-button-start/stop allows the driver to keep the access key fob in a pocket or purse. The standard HomeLink® programmable garage door opener also operates home security devices and other systems.

Models equipped with an automatic transmission have standard Hill-start Assist Control (HAC). HAC helps prevent the vehicle from moving backward when the driver moves their foot from brake pedal to the accelerator.

The standard Lexus Premium Audio System features a six-disc, in-dash CD changer, eight speakers, integrated SiriusXM Satellite Radio receiver (complimentary 90-day trial subscription included), Bluetooth®
hands free phone capability and music streaming, and USB/iPod® connectivity. An equalizer system maintains the same acoustic field when the top is either open or closed, compensating for the natural loss of bass sounds when open. When connected to the USB port, the iPod can be controlled through the audio system or steering wheel controls, while information such as names for the artist, track and album is displayed on the headunit or navigation screen.

Luxury Options
Lexus’ Hard-Disk Drive (HDD) navigation system is available on the IS convertible and is complete with a seven-inch VGA touch-screen, and back-up camera. The navigation system also includes Voice Command casual-language voice recognition system. With Voice Command users avoid having to speak commands in a specific order.  The Voice Command system also works to control many functions of the audio system, heating and air conditioning, and the navigation system.

Like all Lexus models, the IS convertible offers a Mark Levinson® Premium Surround Sound Audio system which is available in conjunction with the optional navigation system. This 12-speaker audio system features discrete 5.1 multi-channel playback with 5.1-channel speaker architecture. Its nine amplifier channels provide 270 watts total output at 0.1 percent total harmonic distortion (THD). From 20-20,000Hz, the Mark Levinson system plays conventional CDs and specially encoded DVD audio and DVD video discs, plus MP3/WMA-formatted CD-R/RW and DVD-R/RW. DVD movies can be viewed on the optional navigation system's color touch screen when the parking brake is engaged.

Optional Bi-Xenon HID headlamps with LED daytime running lamps (DRLs) are also available. The HID headlamps produce a whiter light and have a longer reach and wider distribution than conventional headlamps to help drivers see more clearly. LED DRLs help make the vehicle more visible.

The optional Intuitive Park Assist (IPA) system uses ultrasonic sensors to detect objects close to the car's front and rear bumpers, alerting the driver and showing distance to objects in the multi-information display within the speedometer. When equipped with the optional navigation system, the area behind the vehicle is shown in greater detail on the navigation screen via the backup camera.

The optional Pre-Collision System (PCS) is packaged with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, which uses millimeter-wave radar to measure and help maintain a set distance from a vehicle traveling ahead. PCS relies on the radar sensor to detect obstacles in front of the car, and a PCS computer with sensor inputs from vehicle speed, steering angle and yaw rate is designed to determine whether a collision is unavoidable. In such a situation, PCS alerts the driver via sound and visual warnings while preemptively retracting front seat belts and pre-initializing BA so that increased braking will be applied the instant the driver depresses the pedal.

The IS convertible also offers a telematics system, Lexus Enform® with Safety Connect®, available by subscription. Safety Connect is standard on all vehicles while Lexus Enform with Safety Connect is on all vehicles equipped with the optional Navigation system. Complimentary one-year trial subscriptions are included on all purchases of new Lexus vehicles equipped with these features. The Lexus Enform and the Safety Connect response centers operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week—every day of the year.

Lexus Enform vehicles are factory ready for subscriptions to a variety of innovative SiriusXM services including NavTraffic, NavWeather, Sports, and Stocks. SiriusXM services offer complimentary 90-day trial subscriptions and require separate SiriusXM subscriptions.

F Sport Performance Accessories Available for IS Convertible
The IS convertible F Sport Performance Accessories include performance enhancing parts such as 19-inch forged alloy wheels, brake upgrades, suspension systems, air intake, exhaust systems and more.

F Sport Performance Accessories by Lexus U.S.A. are engineered by Toyota Racing Development (TRD). When installed by an authorized dealer, the accessories are fully warranted for 12 months or for the balance of the new car warranty, whichever is greater.

Exterior Design
The IS 250C and IS 350C’s exterior design has its lineage in the IS sedan but possesses its own dynamic styling, including unique characteristics when interchanging between convertible and coupe configurations. With the exception of the hood, all other body panels have been specifically designed to blend seamlessly with the three-panel folding roof.

The convex shoulder lines distinguish the convertible’s profile, while the top-up configuration provides a sweeping cabin silhouette. With the top down, the belt-line draws up around the rear deck lid, providing a muscular look.

In the front, hood lines flow into a unique chrome grille shape, then continue down into an air inlet before flowing outward past the more distinctive elliptical fog lamp design.

The rear view features a clean, continuous design, with flowing bumper corners and a strong bumper shape that flows inward towards the exhaust. The combination taillamp clusters feature LED lights and two distinct horizontal lines that emphasize breadth, while the LED brake light integrated within the standard rear spoiler imparts a sporty impression.

The IS convertible has a best-in-class 0.29 drag coefficient (Cd). This is accomplished with the help of underbody covers below the engine (with aerodynamic steps), the full floor, and fuel-tank covers, as well as a rear-floor diffuser with vertical fin and airfoil. Other areas that contribute to the low Cd include the design shape of the outer mirrors, high-mount stop lamps, and the rear taillamps. Fender fairings before the front and rear tires reduce airflow into the wheel house, improving aero characteristics and reducing air turbulence.

Interior Design
The IS convertible interior maintains the luxury touch points associated with the IS sport sedans, while additional comfort and entertainment features provide a consistent atmosphere regardless of top configuration. Special attention was given to providing an attractive interior design when viewing the convertible externally. The door and side trim is fashioned to create continuity and continuous flow from front to back.

A four-seat configuration provides each passenger with their own comfort space, and the rear-seat console enhances the rear-passenger amenities with cup holders and storage. Soft padding on the sides of the console and the outer trim areas improve comfort. The rear headrests are retractable for improved visibility and the lever located on the front of the rear console can easily be accessed from the driver’s seat. Rear-seat comfort is enhanced by shifting seat position inboard, providing for sizeable headroom.

Ten-way adjustable power front seats, including power lumbar support are standard, and the available heated/ventilated function has a heating range that includes the shoulder areas and increases airflow in ventilation function. Front-seat backs are scaled inward, and slim, leather-trimmed seat-back pockets help to maximize rear-seat legroom.

The gauge cluster is similar to that of the IS sedan, but there are some additions on the IS convertible for style and function. The convertible features a high-contrast multi-information LCD and decreased surface-glass transmittance for enhance visibility when the top is down. The multi-information display includes status of the hardtop while in transformation, providing a bar graph showing its progress. It also shows a warning to inform the driver if the roof is not completely open/closed, a rear obstacle may impede proper open/close operation, or the open/close function is not available while the vehicle is in motion. Metallic trim around the two main gauges contribute to a premium look.

Warranty
All new Lexus vehicles come with a 48-month/50,000-mile basic limited warranty with roadside assistance for 48 months/unlimited miles. Powertrain and restraint system coverage is provided for 72 months/70,000 miles. Corrosion perforation protection is covered for 72 months, regardless of mileage.

5 Star Review on DealerRater -

"My 2004 Lexus 350 was totaled. Thanks to the many safety features that Lexus has, I was unharmed. I knew then that I would never own anything but a Lexus again. My wife & I went back to Lexus Of Orlando to look for another car. Dion greeted us at the door. He asked if we were there to see anyone in particular. We said that we were not, and he took it from there. Dion was extremely polite, knowledgeable, and a pleasure to do business with. He made buying an automobile as easy as possible. The test drive, tour of the property, and the presentation of our new car was simply first class. He is a credit to Lexus of Orlando. Since our purchase, I have mentioned his name, and the dealership to all who would listen." - ESDryden

Lexus LS 600h L Hybrid Flaghship Sedan Provides a Technologically Advanced, Clean and Refined Ride

  • Standard All-Wheel Drive Package With Torsen Limited Slip Center Differential
  • Standard Advanced Parking Guidance System Effortlessly Guides Drivers
  • Luxurious Interior Complemented by HDD Navigation and Mark Levinson Audio System

The Lexus LS 600h L sedan was the first vehicle to bring fuel-efficient gasoline-electric hybrid technology to the prestige luxury segment when it went on sale for the 2008 model year. The long wheelbase flagship provides the highest level of performance, technology and luxury in the LS line. It is powered by the ultra-quiet Lexus Hybrid Drive system, which was the world's first to combine a V8 gasoline engine with an all-wheel-drive (AWD) hybrid drivetrain.

The LS 600h L hybrid carries over virtually unchanged for 2012 with the exception of the Nebula Gray Pearl exterior replacing Smoky Granite Mica.

Engine/Transmission/Drivetrain/Performance
The LS 600h L hybrid powertrain system uniquely combines a 5.0-liter V8 gasoline engine with two powerful electric motors and a large-capacity battery pack.  The hybrid powertrain generates a peak combined output rating of 438 horsepower and can effortlessly accelerate the LS 600h L from zero-to-60 mph in just 5.5 seconds.  Mid-range acceleration is even more impressive. The system's electric motor is capable of delivering maximum torque on demand and is most beneficial during passing maneuvers.  The LS 600h L can accelerate from 50-70 mph in just 3.5 seconds.

The innovative V8 features an electric motor-driven Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) and Electrically controlled intake cam (VVT-iE). The combination of VVT-iE and oil pressure-controlled VVT-i for the exhaust cam provides superior engine-startup operation and high-output performance.  A specially developed Hydrocarbon Absorber and Catalyst System is linked to the two-way exhaust to help prevent hydrocarbons contained in the exhaust from being released into the atmosphere during cold start up when the catalysts are not up to temperature. The LS 600h L also meets the Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle II (SULEV II) certification.

The LS 600h L is a full hybrid, capable of operating in electric-only mode or with a combination of the gas engine and electric motor.  Lexus hybrid technology allows electric-mode-only operation when certain conditions are met at low speeds or stop-and-go driving conditions, reducing fuel consumption and noise.

A compact 288-volt DC Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) battery pack is installed behind the rear seat. The battery's power is directed through a boost converter that efficiently raises voltage to a maximum 650V DC.  An inverter changes this to AC, providing its elevated power to a 165-kW electric motor that turns at up to 10,240 rpm.  The trunk also contains a 12-volt auxiliary battery that powers the audio, navigation, and other systems.

The LS 600h L powertrain uses two motor generators: MG1 and MG2.  Each performs specific functions and can operate as either a motor or a generator, although MG1 is used as a starter motor and provides no motive force.  The engine-driven generator, MG1, can charge the battery pack or provide additional power to the drive motor, MG2, as needed.

A regenerative-braking system further boosts efficiency.  When the vehicle is coasting or the brakes are applied, the electric motors function as generators, capturing kinetic energy that would normally be lost as heat through the brakes and transforming it into useable electricity to recharge the batteries.

A state-of-the-art, full-time all-wheel drive system adapts to road surface conditions to help provide vehicle control during acceleration, and cornering.  The AWD system employs a compact, ultra-quiet transfer case equipped with a TORSEN® limited-slip differential (LSD) that is 30 percent lighter in size and weight than previous TORSEN systems.

The LSD provides rear biased torque distribution of 40:60 during normal straight-line driving, automatically and continually adjusting power distribution according to changing speed and road conditions.

An eight-speed sequential braking mode, activated when the shift lever is in the “S” position, allows eight different stages of response.  When up-shifting, engine speed is controlled by the selected range, offering an exhilarating boost in acceleration during each of the eight “shift” stages.  When downshifting, brake-force increases to provide powerful deceleration.

The driver can select "Hybrid" (Normal), "Power," or "Snow" modes to change the rate of throttle opening for a given throttle-pedal angle.  The Hybrid mode provides the smoothest operation and is ideal for city or suburban driving; Power sharpens accelerator pedal response and Snow mode softens accelerator pedal response, making it easier to accelerate on slippery road surfaces.

Chassis/Body/Suspension/Tires/Brakes

Multi-link front and rear air-suspension systems help maintain superb vehicle posture and driving performance while maintaining the ultra-comfortable ride that is synonymous with all Lexus vehicles.

The LS 600h L is equipped with large front- and rear-ventilated disc brakes and standard 19-inch, seven-spoke aluminum alloy wheels with all-season tires.  These special wheels receive extensive buffing.

Electronic Power Steering (EPS) delivers a smooth steering feel and reduces parasitic losses. Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) optimizes the steering gear ratio according to vehicle speed, enhancing responsiveness and driver control.

Networked with the Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system, VGRS can make minor adjustments to the front-wheel angle to help provide control in challenging road conditions.

Safety/Security Features
The VDIM system incorporates and manages all of the car’s dynamic handling sub-systems, including: Electronically Controlled Brake (ECB) system, EPS, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Antilock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and engine torque via the electronically controlled throttle. Monitoring a variety of sensors, the system anticipates the onset of a vehicle skid or slide while cornering, and helps correct the situation with a combination of braking, throttle and steering control.

In addition to the active safety features, the LS 600h L is standard-equipped with eight airbags, with a maximum of 11 airbags available through option packages.  The world’s first low-beam LED headlamps provide superior road illumination, and the standard Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) helps to illuminate a turn or curve as the driver steers into it.

The available Advanced Pre-Collision System (APCS) was the world's first system designed to react to pedestrians in the vehicle's path when it debuted on the 2009 Pebble Beach® Edition  LS 600h L.  This system is available for the LS 600h L (and the LS 460 models) with Lane Keep Assist.  Using two small cameras mounted at the front of the car that work in conjunction with millimeter-wave radar, APCS is sensitive enough to detect certain nonmetallic objects.

As part of APCS, the LS also offers the Driver Attention Monitor System, which was another world first.  A third camera, mounted on the steering column, monitors the orientation of the driver's face. If the camera detects that it appears the driver is not looking ahead for a few seconds or more, and if an obstacle is detected ahead, then it alerts the driver, first with a warning chime and a flashing light.  As the car gets closer to the obstacle, APCS can begin to gently apply the brakes on its own.

To help assist the driver in maneuvering around the obstacle, the system reprograms the steering ratio, amplifying the intensity and quickness of the steering response.  At the same time, APCS automatically retracts the front seatbelts and prepares the brake system to respond with full force when activated by the driver in anticipation of a possible impact.

Luxury/Comfort/Convenience
The LS 600h L is based on the long-wheelbase LS chassis, providing nearly five inches more legroom than the standard LS 460 model.  This flagship sedan provides the highest level of comfort and convenience features in the LS series.  Standard features include a hard disk drive (HDD) Lexus Navigation system with a back-up camera, Bluetooth® phonebook download capability, Voice Command casual language voice-recognition system, and an integrated XM Radio receiver.

For theater-level entertainment, the LS 600h L features a standard 19-speaker 450-watt Mark Levinson® Reference Surround Sound audio system.  An auxiliary jack located in the front center console allows for MP3 digital music players while a USB port allows for iPod® connectivity. The audio system also features Bluetooth streaming audio.

Additional standard features include climate-controlled front seats; a driver’s seat that features a standard slide-away feature that makes ingress/egress more comfortable; heated rear seats; a heated steering wheel; power rear sunshade; one-touch open/close power trunk; power door closers; headlamp washers; SmartAccess with push-button start and card key; electronic parking brake; Intuitive Park Assist; and laminated side glass. Intelligent High Beams adjust their brightness in response to oncoming vehicles.

The Cold Weather Package is also standard and features a windshield deicer, upgraded battery and more efficient heater. The LS 600h L also has the Advanced Parking Guidance System (APGS) which is designed to assist with parallel and back-in parking.  Once the driver has correctly positioned the car and identified the desired parking spot via the navigation screen, APGS utilizes the rear back-up camera parking sonar sensors and electric power steering system to guide the car into the space, while the driver controls speed via braking.

Exterior Design
The LS 600h L flagship hybrid luxury sedan showcases the brand’s L-finesse design philosophy, revealing a family resemblance that conveys elegance, refinement and a strong emotional appeal. Minimal body gaps, a low front grille and deep-drawn fenders all contribute to the car's distinctive, muscular profile.  Lexus’ attention to detail is seen in the integrated dual chrome exhaust tips and the one-piece chrome window surround.

Projector-type headlamps with blue crystal rings, which introduced the world's first nighttime LED low beams, help provide excellent visibility and contribute to the design theme.  Blue accents on the headlamps, badging, engine cover and the SmartAccess key fobs and Smart Card key are unique to the LS 600h L – as are the blue-tinted taillamps.

Interior Design
Passenger space and comfort were the primary focus of the interior cabin design.  Genuine semi-aniline leather is featured throughout the cabin, its rich appearance softened and structured with additional stitching to create a relaxed atmosphere.  The leather trim extends beyond the seats and onto the instrument panel, upper front doors and door armrests.

An Alcantara® headliner adds a pleasing touch point, and the center console is placed at the same height as the door armrests to enhance comfort and convenience.  Additional luxury touches unique to the LS 600h L include a wood-trimmed and chrome-plated shift knob and wood-trimmed assist grips.

Lexus Eco Challenge Urges Students to Improve the Environment

Lexus and Scholastic Launch Fifth Annual Environmental Contest with $500,000 in Grants and Scholarships to be Awarded

TORRANCE, Calif., August 30, 2011 – Over the past four years, the Lexus Eco Challenge, an educational program and contest, has inspired and empowered more than 20,000 middle and high school students to learn about the environment and take action to improve it. For their efforts, more than $3 million has been awarded to students, teachers and schools across the nation. This fall, students are invited to participate in the fifth annual Lexus Eco Challenge for a chance to win part of $500,000 in grants and scholarships. Lexus, the luxury automaker, has once again joined with Scholastic Inc., the global children’s publishing, education and media company, to create the eco-friendly educational school program.

"The Lexus Eco Challenge has helped change the way I teach," said Debbie Viertel, a teacher from Lawton Chiles Middle School in Lakeland, Fla. "By giving my students a real-world challenge, they come up with something they care about.  Then they learn all the things I want them to learn in math and science, but the difference is that now they care.  It's a wonderful program."

Last year's grand-prize-winning middle and high school teams demonstrated how passionate students and great ideas can inspire an entire community and improve the environment globally. Educating the community about the contamination of lobsters in local and global waters and raising money to purchase solar panels for their school and encouraging others to look into renewable energy were the two top winning projects.

"Last year the students and teachers went above and beyond the scope of the Lexus Eco Challenge," said Mark Templin, Lexus group vice president and general manager. "We’re eager to see what the fifth year will bring us. Every year, we see the students and their teachers being more resourceful and committed to their projects. It’s wonderful to see how the Lexus Eco Challenge is making an impact on their schools, community and our environment.”

The Challenge has two distinct elements:

  • Standards-based supplementary educational materials - encourages teachers to integrate creative lesson plans into their classrooms to help teach students about the environment.
  • Competition to reward environmental action - helps young people apply what they’ve learned in class through the program and empowers them to make improvements in their community by participating in the environmental team challenges.

The Challenges and Rewards

The Lexus Eco Challenge registration opens on Sept. 26, 2011, and will conclude with the announcement of the first-place and grand-prize-winning teams in Spring 2012. Middle and high school teams, comprised of 5-10 students and a teacher advisor, are invited to participate in one or both of the two initial challenges, each addressing different environmental elements – land/water and air/climate.

For each of the challenges, teams define an environmental issue that is important to them, develop an action plan to address the issue, implement the plan, and report the results. Submission deadlines are: Challenge #1 (Land/Water) – Oct. 31, 2011 and Challenge #2 (Air/Climate) – Dec. 19, 2011.

Each of the challenges will have 16 winning teams – eight middle school and eight high school teams. The winning teams will each receive a total of $10,000 in scholarships and grants to be shared among the students, teacher and school. In addition, the winning action plans will be featured on a special Web page to inspire other students to take action in their communities.

In early January, the winning teams from the first two challenges will be invited to participate in the Final Challenge. Teams will be asked to reach beyond the local community and inspire environmental action around the world through innovative ideas that are communicated to a wide audience. From the Final Challenge entries, eight first-place teams and two grand-prize-winning teams will be selected. Each of the eight first-place teams will receive a total of $15,000 in grants and scholarships, and the two grand-prize-winning teams will each receive $30,000. The money will be shared by the students, their teacher advisors and their schools.

Judging Criteria
All entries for the initial two challenges will be judged on a variety of criteria, including the overall action plan and team effort, the quality of writing, and supporting materials. A select panel of judges will consider questions such as: does the action plan show the team’s clear understanding of the environmental issue; does the action plan clearly describe the results; does the action plan communicate a persuasive argument; and does the action plan communicate team effort?

Lexus, Toyota Steer HD Radio With iTunes Tagging

Carradio2
While much of the focus in digital audio has been on Pandora, HD digital radio is continuing to make slow but steady progress -- including that the technology will be offered as a factory-installed option in new cars from Lexus and Toyota.

The news is significant because original equipment manufacturer (OEM) deals are one of the main battlegrounds between HD radio and alternatives like Pandora and Sirius XM.

Lexus revealed that it will be offering HD radio with iTunes tagging capability in the 2013 GS 350 model, which was unveiled for the first time at the "Concours d'Elegance" in Pebble Beach. The 2013 GS 350 is the first vehicle from Lexus to offer HD radio technology as a factory-installed option.

In addition, Toyota said it will be offering HD radio technology as a factory-installed option in the 2012 Camry, also with iTunes tagging capability.

In addition to Lexus and Toyota, the list of carmakers that have OEM deals to offer HD radio in new models also includes Audi, Bentley, BMW, Ford, Hyundai, Jaguar, Kia, Land Rover, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, MINI USA, Rolls-Royce, Scion, Subaru, Tesla, Volkswagen and Volvo.

There are currently around 2,000 AM and FM stations broadcasting HD radio signals, including 1,300 which are using the technology to broadcast additional programming through HD multicasts.

However, HD radio faces stiff competition in the crucial OEM arena from Sirius XM and online audio service Pandora, which is a relative newcomer to the automotive market.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times in October 2010, Pandora founder Tim Westergren said: "Our goal is to be in every new car that rolls off the manufacturing line." Then in January of this year, Pandora and Toyota announced that the carmaker will integrate the country's Pandora into Toyota's "Entune" multimedia system, allowing users to access Pandora via any cell phone with a data plan, including smart and feature phones.

Pandora also has partnerships with Ford and Mercedes, along with radio manufacturers Alpine and Pioneer, whose aftermarket products allow drivers to access Pandora from car dashboards.

New GS Hybrid To Be First Lexus With All-LED Headlights

2011-08-25_0749
A few years ago Lexus announced that it would be the first mainstream automaker to launch a production model fitted with LED headlights, in this case, the LS 600h.

Around the same time, Audi announced that it would be launching LED headlights on its R8 and that its lights would include LED elements for both the low and high beams, while the Lexus only used LEDs for the low beam.

However, what Audi didn’t say was that its LED headlights wouldn’t be launched for more than year.

Now, after pioneering their use in a mainstream model, Lexus is about to launch its first model with all-LED headlights.

That model will be the 2013 Lexus GS 450h hybrid sedan, which comes onto the market next year.

The design will be inspired by the units seen on the LF-Gh concept car, and could be revealed as early as next month’s 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show.

The advantage of using LEDs is their ultra-high 6,000 Kelvin temperature rating, which is roughly the same color as ordinary daylight. By comparison, xenon lights only manage a 4,100 K rating and the yellowish hue of halogen lamps only rate at 3,200 K.

Other benefits of LEDs are their longer lifespan, smaller overall size and lower power usage. The lights also provide developers with greater freedom for their designs as the diodes can be placed in unconventional arrangements and patterns.

Lexus RX450h: The Gold-Plated Workhorse

T300-17_2010_rx_450h
IT CAME TO ME while I was at the dump, in line with half a dozen pickup trucks, and then again when I was off-loading 600 pounds of stone for the garden:  This may be a $45,000 Lexus packed with another $16,000 worth of options, and it may even be a gas-electric hybrid (it is), but underneath all that it’s a workhorse.

OK, not in the sense of bolting on a snowplow or hitching up a dual-axle trailer full of construction equipment, and the thought of wedging a 4x8 sheet of plywood into this white leather interior makes me cringe (the garden stone was stacked on a tarp; that white Wilton carpet, or whatever the cargo bed is lined with, was untouched, I assure you, and by the way I didn’t have to fold down the rear seats), but for all the chores that the Porsche or the Bentley can’t manage.

Finally I get this thing. All these years, while it’s been a best-seller for Lexus, I’ve been weighing the RX against the BMW X5 and VW Touareg and so on—even against Toyota’s own Land Cruiser—and thinking I must be thick. High-dollar, high-zoot sport-utility vehicles should coddle their passengers, haul stuff, go when it’s slippery, and impress the neighbors. The RX, especially the 450h AWD, can do all that. But as a driver I was always looking for some soul, some personality, some of that sense of mastering the known universe that a deluxe SUV should impart. (Mixed in, naturally, with some self-loathing for using a two-and-one-quarter-ton vehicle for mere personal transportation.) I would have settled for a bit of feedback from the steering or the occasional growl from the tailpipes.

But the thing is, happy Lexus owners don’t care. Driving—at least to the dump and the supermarket and the garden center—is a chore, and to perform chores one has appliances. Appliances should be shiny but otherwise invisible. Appliances with personality might intrude on our lives or somehow disappoint. Above all, Lexus does not wish to disappoint.

With electricity whirring through its bloodstream, the RX450h is even more of an appliance than its gas-only RX350 sibling. The 450’s engine is a 3.5-liter 6-cylinder; its motor is a “high-output, permanent-magnet electric-drive” unit perched over an axle. The only difference between the front-wheel- and all-wheel-drive RX450h is that the AWD model has two electric motors, the second one at the back, to power the rear wheels as needed. Curiously, Lexus says the total output, gas+electric, for each vehicle is the same, 295 horsepower, even though one of them has two powerplants and the other three. Doddling around town I got 28.2 miles per gallon, less than the predicted 32 but a lot more than the 18 MPG the gas-only RX is rated for. Top speed is governed to 112 miles per hour.

Lexus has disguised this stepless, continuously variable transmission by programming six “gears” and all-but-seamless “shifts” into its brain, and even added a manual-shift option. Oddly, for Lexus, when the battery is down and the gas engine restarts, it does so with a noticeable shudder. (Back in Japan an entire powertrain team had to commit ritual seppuku over this. Probably.) Many hybrid cars drive like sugar-free chocolate tastes but, restarting aside, the RX450h feels quite car-like, with just a bit more ankle-flexing than normal required to get the throttle into action. I should rather say the RX feels quite Lexus-like: as hushed as the Vatican, as isolated from reality as a US Senator, and terribly tastefully decorated. The RX is far better equipped than my home (and probably safer) and, as usual for this sort of vehicle, many of its features are customizable and adjustable. Unusually, though, this is accomplished by mousing a cursor over a screen and then clicking “enter.” The joystick seems touchy at first, but you get used to it.

The RX450h is an ultimate automotive appliance: unobtrusive, efficient, multi-tasking. My guess is that when the autonomous vehicle arrives in a few years, the RX will be among the first to be able to operate without a driver.

Lexus Crafts Dazzling LS 600h L Landaulet for Monaco Royal Wedding

665003_468x550

To celebrate the July wedding of His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco to Charlene Wittstock, Lexus gave the couple something a bit nicer than a toaster: a very special version of its flagship sedan. The hybrid LS 600h L Landaulet features a one-piece transparent roof—just right for the newlyweds to see and be seen during a parade-speed tour of their diminutive principality.

Despite its single use, this is no garage-made chop job; the LS 600h L Landaulet required more than 2,000 artisan-hours and a phalanx of engineering talent to create. It was made by Brussels, Belgium-based coachbuilder Carat Duchatelet, a company that’s been crafting VIP-worthy stretched and armored vehicles for 40 years. Lexus insisted that the Landaulet maintain the quality, safety, and drivability of the LS 600h L, as well as its structural rigidity and torsional stiffness  no small feat without a steel roof or pillars.

So Carat Duchatelet employed highly advanced computer simulations and 3-D modeling to design the Landaulet. The donor car was completely disassembled and structurally reinforced with advanced honeycomb materials, Kevlar, and carbon fiber composite. Reassembly by a team of 10 craftspeople happened under the watchful eye of a team from Lexus, and the Landaulet was painted with several coats of an environmentally friendly, water-based midnight blue paint. The car’s polycarbonate roof panel—three-tenths of an inch thick and similar to a fighter jet’s bubble canopy—is removable and weighs only 57 pounds.

Mechanically, the Landaulet is identical to the standard-issue LS 600h L, with a 5.0-liter gasoline V-8 driving all four wheels with the assistance of an electric motor. At low speeds, the car is capable of running on battery power alone, which meant the royal couple’s post-ceremony waft happened sans emissions—a feat that, to quote Lexus, “...matches well with His Serene Highness’ keen interest in promoting sustainable development and environmental protection.”

Lexus is mum on the subject of cost for this impressive flex of its engineering muscle. And as for odds that the LS 600h L Landaulet will grace your local Lexus showroom? Simply stated, you’re more likely to marry a prince.

Hot & Cold Winter GetAways

Lifestyle-hotcold-01-northernlights
COLD: See Alaska's Northern Lights
First up, a once-in-a-lifetime experience to finally just go do. True, Fairbanks is cold in winter, but the Alaska city is among the best viewing spots in the world. The auroras appear most frequently until the vernal equinox (March 20), so book a room at The Aurora Borealis Lodge, where the staff will wake you up when the lights appear.

HOT: Walk South Island, New Zealand
Or consider a serious hiking expedition. In February or March, join The Wayfarers for a walking tour of New Zealand, where the season is late summer, the trails are verdurous, and the scenery is spectacular. You’ll cover four to seven miles a day at an easy to moderate pace, with a Lord of the Rings setting as your reward.

COLD: Get in Costume at the Carnival of Venice
In winter, Venice is cold and moody—and usually lighter on tourists. In other words, it’s a good time to go, especially during that parade of masks, the Carnival of Venice (February 26 to March 8). For your costume, look no further than Atelier Pietro Longhi; its website showcases a spectacular array of costumes for rent, allowing revelers to reserve their disguise and schedule a pickup date. Stay at the chic Palazzina Grassi, where your couture costume will be matched only by the Philippe Starck design.

HOT: Teach English & Sports in Ecuador
Sprinkle some purpose into your winter getaway by volunteering in Otavalo, Ecuador, where schools are desperately in need of English-speaking teachers. Through Global Vision International, you’ll board with a local family who will provide three meals a day, hot water, and the chance to practice your Spanish. Whether you stay for two weeks or dig in for a few months, your time spent is the essence of giving back.

COLD: Stargaze at the Boulder International Film Festival
Even though the Rockies are its showpiece, Boulder can still be a welcome winter retreat for those people who might be less, shall we say, athletically inclined. The Boulder International Film Festival runs from February 17–20, and with discounted rates at the St. Julien Hotel and Spa, the event is the perfect excuse to treat yourself to a massage after the movie.

HOT: Learn to Surf in Hawaii
What could be better than riding the waves of Oahu? Being accompanied by a few of the island’s best firefighters/surf instructors, that’s what. The guides from Hawaiian Fire Surf School lead safe, memorable lessons, complete with transportation to and from your hotel. The new Trump Waikiki, which anchors the revitalized Waikiki Beach Walk entertainment complex, is a prime base for practicing on your own off Waikiki Beach.

COLD: Shop & Dine at New York's Eataly
Mario Batali’s temple of Italian cuisine has proven to be such a success that it requires a strategy to visit without having to queue up (basically, go between mealtimes). With 700 wines, 400 cheeses, and nearly 100 olive oils, plus seafood, salumi, pasta, and gelato, there’s nothing like it under one roof, anywhere. Watch the shopping show from any one of 12 restaurants, from the formal Manzo (meat) to the festive Le Verdure (vegetarian) to La Pizza & Pasta.

HOT: Soak in Costa Rica’s Hot Springs
These natural thermal springs provide the perfect, carbon-neutral remedy for your winter blues. Whether you visit for the day or make it your resting place for a week, Tabacon Grand Spa Thermal Resort offers a paradisal setting with hot pools ranging from 77 to 122 degrees and luxurious accommodations with views of Arenal Volcano. The spa smartly restricts the number of non-hotel visitors, so make a reservation and prepare to sink into mineral bliss.

COLD: Watch Pro Skiers
Park City, Utah's Deer Valley, one of the nation’s top ski destinations, plays host to the 2011 FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships on February 2 to 5. Opening and closing ceremonies featuring live music are open to the public, and it’s an excellent chance to see the pros up close. Be sure to snag a room at the brand-new ski-in/ski-out Montage Deer Valley. The third property (after Laguna Beach and Beverly Hills, Calif.) in this super-premium chain is located within snowball-throwing distance of three high-speed chairlifts.

WARM: Graze & Spa in Miami
One of the country’s premier foodie extravaganzas, the 10th annual Food Network South Beach Food & Wine Festival (February 24 to 27) attracts chefs such as James Beard Award winner Michelle Bernstein and features tasting tents right on the beach. Work off all that cuisine at the sensational, reopened Fontainebleau, where you can swim laps in one of Miami Beach’s biggest hotel pools and work out on the Lapis Spa’s Trazer 2 high-tech interactive equipment.

Lexus Offers IS Convertible – A Stylish Coupe with Luxurious Amenities
