On June 12th, Automotive Interiors Expo 2012 hosted the first ever Automotive Interiors Expo Awards, a ceremony that honoured the world's finest designers, innovations and products in the automotive interiors arena. The judging panel included leading automotive journalists.
The 'Production Vehicle Interior Innovation of the Year' Award recognizes 'a technology or technical design innovation that pushes the boundaries and could become standard fare in as many vehicles as possible, as soon as possible'.
Jean-Jacques Serraf, General Manager Brand Management at Lexus Europe, commented as follows at the award ceremony in Stuttgart: "We are very pleased and honored to receive this award, which recognizes one crucial dimension for the New GS: creating an amazing customer experience thanks to leading edge technologies. This is a good illustration of the Lexus brand direction - 'Progressive Luxury' ."
Considerably more powerful than the previous system, the new air-conditioning system available in the new GS features S-Flow technology to maintain optimum comfort whilst significantly reducing power consumption. Using sensors it determines if the front passenger seat is occupied and automatically closes all vents serving this seat. The same happens to the rear seats when the S-Flow button is switched on. This maximises system efficiency.
The system also measures the ambient air temperature, interior air temperature and insulation to determine the optimal level of air conditioning. The target airflow volume is customised for each seat through Temperature Airflow Output control. Upper and lower independent, multilayer air mix technology has been adopted to achieve an environment tailored for driver, front and rear passengers. The new system also introduces a 2-tier interior / exterior air control which prevents window fogging.
In addition, the air conditioning system incorporates a new nanoe ® system. This air cleaning technology operates automatically when the air conditioning is turned on. It releases 20 to 50 Nm diameter nanoe particles – negatively charged ions wrapped in water molecules – into the cabin via the driver's side dashboard air vent.
By attaching themselves to airborne particles and molecules, the nanoe ions have a purifying and odour eliminating effect. They also deodorise vehicle seats and roof lining to create a cleaner cabin environment.
And because nanoe moisture contents is approximately 1,000 times that of conventional ions, the nanoe system has a moisturing effect on skin and hair, acting to enhance occupant well-being.
Production Vehicle Interior Innovation of the Year – Lexus for the GS
Only production vehicles launched in the last 12 months qualified for the shortlist, but aesthetics did not matter in this category. The jury was asked to vote solely for the technology or technical design innovation that they felt pushed the boundaries and could and should become standard fare in as many vehicles as possible, as soon as possible.
